Mareike Bout, SA Personal Trainer of the Year (2008)
If you had told me 10 years ago that I would be glowing with good health, have the body of my dreams, an abundance of energy, be a champion figure competitor and operate a highly successful health and fitness business, I would have thought "no way!" At the time, my lifestyle was very different to the way I live today. I ate too much and didn't care about what food I put in my body. I drank too much alcohol and smoked too many cigarettes. Exercise was something that fit people did - I didn't even have the energy to go for a walk!

In 2000, I was given an opportunity to take responsibility for my health when a potentially serious health issue prompted me to stop smoking. While I turned a corner in one respect, I was still harming my body by continuing to eat junk food and drink excessively. After 6 months of not smoking I found myself 5 kilos heavier on an already overweight body and feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable about the way I looked and felt. The day I bought my first size 16 top was the day I said "enough".
Once I was given the gift of awareness that I wasn't comfortable in my skin anymore, I became willing to take the necessary action steps towards the change I suddenly so desperately wanted. Within a few days I put down the pizza and picked up an apple, bought a push-bike and joined a gym. What started out as a wish to simply lose a few kilos turned into a life-changing, ongoing mission to educate and develop myself physically, mentally and spiritually. What drives me now is my desire to share my experiences and strengths with others so that they may also learn to "Live Well!"

4 years ago I was working as an educator and accompanied my mother to a 'group fitness' session. Although reasonably fit, I very quickly learnt what a high level of fitness could do for my life. I was inspired and motivated and suddenly my life was transformed from both a physical and mental perspective. I was hooked on the pursuit of my wellbeing and as an educator I wanted to share this with others.

Whilst training I became a qualified Personal Trainer and fulfilled my desire to educate others in fitness and wellbeing. This is something I will do for the rest of my life. I intend to continue my studies in the health industry to further my understanding and knowledge and to provide excellence in physical education and to bring this to others. I know that the pursuit of my wellbeing is an ongoing and whole of life commitment.
Fitness is my passion, and I love helping others and inspiring others to achieve their best. I love to see people having as much fun as I do with fitness. I can honestly say I love my work, it doesn't actually feel like work. I have now been working for 'One Life' for 3 years.
The type of training I enjoy doing with my groups is fun filled, active games, combined with traditional cardio and strength building exercises. I believe that fitness has to be fun and a trainer has to be motivating. Having worked as a Physical Education & Health teacher and having coached a variety of team sports I have developed many skills, in particular a love of fun team games. Using this type of training in my own group sessions has shown amazing benefits, provided fun and rewarding sessions for clients and regular attendance.
Other training I like to do on my own or with friends includes outdoor group fitness, walking, bike riding, running, bushwalking and circuit training.
